"Unpack Your Suitcase"
Let's French
Victory

Nmber of listens: |||
Stars (out of 5): 3

It's funny this song came up in the randomness because the only reason it's in my iTunes library is because I was listening to songs last weekend for possible inclusion in a 4-7 minute film my friends and I made for the 48 Hour Film Project. This is a band that a fellow group member had seen and contacted to get their CD.

More so with their other songs I can totally name other bands that seem to have influenced them. With this one, though, I am drawing a blank. It reminds me of someone, but I can't place my finger on who. I think it's a good song. The beginning didn't catch me as well as I would have liked, but later on the song makes up for it. They have good guitar lines going on and unlike many bands, it doesn't fall apart and sound empty at parts. No lyrics for this one...let me know if you have them and I will post them.

I am admittedly unsure of how established Let's French is so I don't want to make some statement about them being new or old.

"Where Is Everybody?"
Nine Inch Nails
Things Falling Apart

Nmber of listens: ||
Stars (out of 5): 4

I love this song. It's weird and different and I can't really figure it out, but I still like it a lot. It starts off almost boring and then that crazy, slow beat comes in that is as loud, if not louder than his voice. And the lyrics are good because they aren't just nonsense, but they are still a bit cryptic and vague.

Oh sorry, I forgot to review the song because I keep listening to it. Man does it go cray cray at the end!

did you happen to catch
or did it happen so fast
what you thought would always last
has passed you by
is everything speeding up
or am I slowing down
just spinning around
and I don't know why
all the pieces don't fit
thought I really didn't give a shit
I never wanted to be like you
but for all I aspire
I am really a liar
and I'm running out of things I can do

I'd like to stay
but every day
everything pushes me further away
if you could show
help me to know
how it's supposed to be
where did it go?

pleading and
needing and
bleeding and
breeding and
feeding
exceeding
where is everybody?
trying and
lying
defying
denying
crying and
dying
where is everybody?

well okay, enough
you've had your fun
but come on there has got to be someone
that hasn't yet become
so numb
and succumb
and
god damn I am so tired of pretending
of wishing I was ending
when all I'm really doing is trying to hide
and keep it inside
and fill it with lies
open my eyes?
maybe I wish I could try

pleading and
needing and
bleeding and
breeding and
feeding
exceeding
where is everybody?
trying and
lying
defying
denying
crying and
dying
where is everybody?

"English Country Garden"
The Darkness
One Way Ticket To Hell

Nmber of listens: |
Stars (out of 5): 2

I was so excited when I first heard The Darkness. I think I was in Richmond at the time and my friend and I loved to sing along with the falsetto. Now my opinion on them is just "eh." Take 'em or leave 'em.

This song has some good melodies within, but I think I keep likening them to Scissor Sisters with an edge and I can't stand SS at the moment. This would be a good song for a road trip when you're speeding down a back road.

It was a cigarette break and I was desp...erate
I saw her pushing a wheelbarrow
She said have you got a match? and I said yes
My cock and Farmer Giles' prizewinning marrow

Frolicking in the summer fields were we
I fell for you, and you grew to like me

I carved "U4 me” in the bark of a tree in an English Country Garden
We rolled around, Kissing on the ground, in an English Country Garden
You succumbed to my charms, fell asleep in my arms in an English Country Garden
Beneath the stars above I fell in love in a English Country Garden

Jardin Jardin Jardin Jardin

They did a quiz at the village fete, we came last
Everybody laughed at the two of us
Never seen a bale of hay, move so fast
She was a bonefide forking genius

Frolicking in the autumn fields were we
I cherished you, and you tolerated me

We mucked about when we were mucking out, in an English Country Garden
Took me under your wing when we had our fling, in an English Country Garden
You gave my heart a boost, You ruled the roost, in an English Country Garden
Just as I got broody, you got moody, in an English Country Garden

English Country Garden
English Country Garden

Pulling all the stops, harvesting the crops in an English Country Garden
The uield was meagre, you were far less eager, in an English Country Garden
Seeds we scattered, never really mattered, in a English Country Garden
I saw you leave the farm on another guys arm in a English Country Garden.

Jardin Jardin Jardin Jardin Whooo !

"Only Ones Who Know"
Arctic Monkeys
Favourite Worst Nightmare

Nmber of listens: ||
Stars (out of 5): 4

I love the Arctic Monkeys. I liked them after their first album, but after getting Favourtie Worst Nightmare I have had a renewed love for them. I like Alex Turner's voice a lot and also think that their songs are catchy in the best way.

This is one of their slow songs and it's quite simple with basic chords being strummed to accompany what sounds like a far away voice. I'm not sure I would change anything about the track. Sometimes when I listen to it, I keep expecting it to pick up at some point and it doesn't. It's not a bad thing, but I guess I'm so used to hearing more upbeat Arctic Monkeys that an entire slow song can sometimes throw me.

In a foreign place
The saving grace was the feeling
That it was her heart that he was stealing
He was ready to impress
And the fierce excitement
The eyes are bright
He couldn't wait to get away
And I bet that Juliet was just the icing on the cake
Make no mistake, no

And even if somehow he could have shown you
The place you wanted
Well I'm sure you could have made it that bit better on your own
And I bet she told a million people that she'd stay in touch
But all the little promises that don't mean much
When there's memories to be made
And I hope you're holding hands by New Year's Eve
They made it far too easy to believe
That true romance can't be achieved these days

And even if somehow they could have shown you the place you wanted
Well I'm sure you could have made it that bit better on your own
You are the only ones who know

"Wind Up"
Foo Fighters
The Colour And The Shape

Nmber of listens: |||
Stars (out of 5): 3

My Foo Fighters obsession used to be out of control. Should the FBI ever need to investigate me and get ahold of my computer from undergrad they would find so many Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters pictures saved on there that I think they would worry I was insane. I still love Foo Fighters, but I have it a little more under control:)

I like this song, but it is not one of my favorites. I give it a higher number of stars because it is so much fun to sing along with. The beat is catchy and Dave Grohl's energy (like in all of his songs) elevates what would be a simple song to a new level.

I have a choice between the bat or the belt
Each time I hear about the hand you've been dealt
Spare me confession it's confession you sell
Maybe I'll fall behind but I don't mind because I'll catch up
I want a song that's indelible Like manimal
I hope you never see me wind up
Will I be happy on the back of the shelf
Will you be happy when we're sharing a cell
Spare me your questions since you know me so well
Someday you'll realize that I get shy and I choke up
I want a song that's indelible Like manimal
I hope you never see me wind up
What is wrong with this animalI'm terrible
I hope you never see me wind up
Farewell my sweet paramania
Farewell my sweet paramania
My only promise is that I'll never tell
Keep you at a distance from the things that I felt
I'll bite the bullet take the beating until
I take it all back anyway what was I supposed to say?
I want a song that's indelible Like manimal
I hope you never see me wind up
What is wrong with this animal
I'm terrible
I hope you never see me wind up

"Wound (If I Wait)"
The Smashing Pumpkins
Machina Acoustic Demos

Nmber of listens: |||
Stars (out of 5): 4

My awesome friend Anna gave me this CD of their Machina demos for my birthday one year and it was such a great gift. Sometimes you just can't beat acoustic songs and they are perfection. AND he says "pop tart" in it and I am obsessed with those yum yums.

Not much musicall to comment on as it's just a basic song that is made better by Billy Corgan's voice, which really, could be said about much of his stuff. I think his distinctive voice is really what makes a lot of their songs.

Wound opens reveal a broken man
Soon notions, blood on his hands
Stop, stop, pop tart
Taste of your demands

If you wait, I will wait
If you taste, I will taste
If you run, I will run
If you love, I will love
To my last prayer

Tomb opens reveal a stack of gold
Cool poison, the taste of growing old
Sit down, downtown
In your tower of steel

If you wait, I will wait
Taste, I will taste
If you run, I will run
Love, I will love
To my last prayer
My last prayer
To my last prayer

Wound opens reveal a broken man
Soon notions, blood on his hands

If you wait, I will wait
Taste, I will taste
If you run, I will run
Love, I will love
To my last prayer

If you wait, if you wait
If you wait, if you wait

"The District Sleeps Alone Tonight"
The Postal Service
Give Up

Nmber of listens: |||
Stars (out of 5): 4

I *heart* The Postal Service. (I also *heart* the USPS.) I don't think this is their best song, but I tend to give it a higher review than I normally would because of it's title. Because, not only do I *heart* The Postal Service, but I *heart* DC.

The best part of the song is 3 minutes in when it picks up in tempo and Ben Gibbard starts singing about the 'gaudy apartment complex", otherwise, it can be a tad slow. I love it, I do, but it's not their best work. And I have to admit, I always thought he sang, "bloody apartment complex"! Dammit, I always sing the wrong words.

Ben Gibbard's lyrics beat all.

Smeared black ink
Your palms are sweaty
And I'm barely listening
To last demands
I'm staring at the asphalt wondering
What's buried underneath where I am

I'll wear my badge
A vinyl sticker with big block letters
Adherent to my chest
That tells your new friends
I am a visitor here: I am not permanent
And the only thing keeping me dry is where I am

You seem so out of context
In this gaudy apartment complex
A stranger with your door key
Explaining that I am just visiting
And I am finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving

D.C. sleeps alone tonight

You seem so out of context
In this gaudy apartment complex
A stranger with your door key
Explaining that I am just visiting
And I finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving

The district sleeps alone tonight
After the bars turn out their lights
And send the autos swerving
Into the loneliest evening
And I am finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving

I love me some bagpipes! I'm not exactly sure how to review a song that is all bagpipes, but basically, when looking for a good bagpipes song, I would recommend one that isn't too long. This one, clocking in at about 2 minutes is perfect. Bagpipes tend to sound the same after awhile so it's best to just get the melody in, play it, play the 'chorus' and get out of there. And now, after having seen live bagpipes and drum groups, I can picture them all marching around. FUN!

"The Friend Catcher
The Birthday Party
Hits

Nmber of listens: |
Stars (out of 5): 2

I bought this CD only because of their song "Mr. Clarinet Man" and really haven't listened to it much otherwise.

I like the lines using "chinny chin chin." What fun! I wouldn't exactly put this song on a party mix, but it's interesting and with about a minute left it picks up some and he sings his "chinny chin chin" lines:) The end is a bunch of feedback from the guitars and then it just stops. Eh, not the best.

I, cigarette fingers
puff and poke
puff and poking the smoke
touches the ground

You, your lungs and your wrists
they throb like trains
choo choo choo
it's a prison of sound

of sound

She, by my chinny chin chin [buying chilly chin-chin?]
Eee-oh Eee-oh
Like a zippo smokes the way
hope, around

You, your lungs and your wrists
they throb like trains
choo choo choo
It's a prison of sound

a prison of sound

She, by the hair of my chinny chin chin
Eee-oh Eee-oh Eee-oh Eee-oh
Like a zippo smokes the way
hope, around

You, your lungs and your wrists
they throb like trains
choo choo choo
it's a prison of sound

I poke around...

"Round The Bend"
Beck
Sea Change

Nmber of listens: ||
Stars (out of 5): 2

My sister is a bigger Beck fan than I am and I got this album from her. I was all about him in middle school when "Loser" came out and we all tried to figure out what exactly he was saying. Then, in college I was all about the song "Debra" and played it on my radio show each week.

This is a very slow song and not of his typical style. I'm not too into it and, in fact, keep forgetting I'm reviewing this song. It's all right, I guess, but it's too damn slow. I can't get into it.

We don't have to worry
Life goes where it does
Faster than any bullet
From an empty gun
Turn yourself over
Loose change we could spend
Grinding down diamonds
Round, round, round the bend
Round, round, round the bend

People pushing harder
Up against themselves
Making their daggers sharper
Then their faces tan
Babe, it's your time now
Loose change we could spend
When we're going
Round, round, round the bend
Round, round, round the bend

"Before Three"
The Cure
The Cure

Nmber of listens: ||
Stars (out of 5): 4

I love this song. It makes me happy. I'm sitting here in the Barnes & Noble Cafe and seriously, it's hard not keep from smiling and singing along. I am holding it together by just tapping my foot. Whenever I love a song by The Cure I wonder if I would enjoy it so much if not sung by Robert Smith because his voice is so distinct and full of something. I don't want to say emotion because I'm not sure if that's true, but it is a voice one can pick out any time and besides the gloominess of The Cure, it's what sets them apart.

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah...

The happiest day I ever knew
In a sea of gold down next to you
So blurred and tired under summer sun
You whispered dreams of a world to come...
We were so in love
In this sea of gold - so young and tired
Under summer sun hard by your side
Whispering dreams down next to you...
We were so in love - The happiest day
Yeah the happiest day I knew
But summer sun sea of gold
This perfect day oh so long ago
Whispering dreams so blurred and tired
We have to keep this day alive
Whispered dreams so young and tired
It's hard to hold this day inside

And the happiest night I ever had
Up next to you in silver sand
So scared and high under winter moon
You whispered dreams that would all come true...
We were so in love
Up next to you so fucked and high
Under winter moon it made me cry
Whispering dreams on silver sand...
We were so in love - The happiest night

Yeah the happiest night I had
But winter moon and silver sand
This perfect night in another land
Whispering dreams so scared and high
We have to keep this night alive
Whispered dreams so fucked and high
It's hard to hold this night inside

Yeah and every summer's sun I want again
And every winter's moon I want the same
My happiest day and my happiest night
Always next to you... And held deep inside...
Keeps me alive

"Talking"
Descendents
Cool To Be You

Nmber of listens: ||
Stars (out of 5): 4

Um, I LOVE The Descendents. I've never seen them live, but I did see ALL twice and they're 3/4 Decendents so that's something, right? I think any music fan, not just a punk fan, needs to know and appreciate The Descendents. I don't listen to a lot of the punk stuff I used to like, but The Descendents will always be in my musical rotations.

I think this band gets some good harmonies in there which I like. It's not just yelling and screaming words, there is actual music in there. I love it and I hope you do, too.

Talking about our life, no matter how much I don’t like
Talk is never cheap between you and me
Look at how far we’ve come, and still we always come undone
Maybe that’s how it always has to be

I'm out here alone, talking on the phone
Tensions are rising, it’s never surprising
This is the way it goes
Maybe we’ll fall in love when I get home

Talking about our life, seems like we never get it right
But we always get an A for effort
We sweat to find what to say, communication’s the only way
If we ever hope to stay together – Communicate!

I'm out here alone, talking on the phone
Tensions are rising, it’s never surprising
This is the way it goes
Maybe we’ll fall in love when I get home

Tell me the problem, I wanna know
If there’s a solution, I'll fix it now
And if there isn’t, I'll just be there
If I don’t say something, don’t say I don’t care

Well, I go yaddaddayaddaya, and you go yaddaddayaddaya
Yaddaddayaddayadda is what we gotta do

I'm out here alone, talking on the phone
Tensions are rising, it’s never surprising
This is the way it goes
Maybe we’ll fall in love when I get home

This song begs to be sung live with both Tom Delonge and Mark Hoppus (sp?) taking turns at the microphone. And with Travis Barker keeping up that constant, quick bass drum. Loves it. I actually do really like this song. That beat that sounds like it gets off beat because it's so fast. I'm guessing this song is about when Tom dropped out of high school as a lot of the songs on this album are about that. I would also like to take this time to say how incredibly hott I think Tom Delonge is.

Oh, and when I get my new iPod for Christmas (80GB), I might have to change the header on here.

I know I'm pathetic, I knew when she said it
A loser, a bum's what she called me when I drove her home
There's no more waiting and sure no more wasting
I've done all I can but she still wants to be left alone

You got, you got, you got to help me out
And I'll try not to argue
No one, no one, no one likes a drop-out
Mistakes are hard to undo

Don't pull me down, this is where I belong
I think I'm different, but I'm the same and I'm wrong
Don't pull me down, this is where I belong
I think I'm different, this is where I belong

I think it's disgusting, believing and trusting
If I gave a fuck there would be nothing for me to prove
Although it's amusing, it's slightly confusing
I've done all I can but her ego is still hard to move

You got, you got, you got to help me out
And I'll try not to argue
No one, no one, no one likes a drop-out
Mistakes are hard to undo

Don't pull me down, this is where I belong
I think I'm different, but I'm the same and I'm wrong
Don't pull me down, this is where I belong
I think I'm different, this is where I belong

Don't pull me down, this is where I belong
I think I'm different, this is where I belong
